Dear friends (Pedimos já desculpa, mas amanhã vamos enviar em Português)
On 1 October Portugal will be going to the election booths across the country for municipal elections. At ASMAA we believe that the upcoming weeks are a perfect opportunity for entering into contact with all candidates across 17 council regions so as to establish their standpoint and what they will be doing if elected in regard to the following:
1. their position on onshore and offshore drilling
2. their position on deep-sea mining
3. their position on a move to alternative energies
4. their position on forestry management and elimination of eucalyptus and pine trees
5. their position on ocean protection
6. their position on unabated concrete building of our costal zones
7. their position on the A22 tolls and the latest traffic management strategy of the EN125 (continuous white lines and barrier posts)
Unlike a national campaign that is currently running we will be approaching each and every candidate to every available council and parish. Their replies or lack thereof will be published in our website, and each candidate will be awarded either a green card or a red card.
During the third week of September until election day, if we manage to raise all the necessary funds we will be distributing 100,000 flyers, and about 100 (1189x841 posters) per council region (17 council areas) showcasing local election candidates with red and green cards as a way to inform local voters.
With this campaign, we will be inviting all candidates to voluntary enter into a social contract with their local constituents. In this contract, we request that should they change their minds without a substantiated justification and without the consent of the local population that voted them in during the course of their mandates, that they will do the right thing and that they will resign their posts.
This campaign is not a left versus right, nor is it one party is better or worse than another. This campaign aims to bring honesty and trust into the campaign trail.
To ensure that we have the funds needed to run this campaign the following has been budget for:
1. 100 posters (1189x841) x 17 council areas – estimated cost – 2,800 €
2. 100,000 A5 campaign info flyers (both sides) – estimated cost – 1,000 €
3. Distribution of 100,000 flyers using the Post Office – estimated cost of 40€ per thousand – 4,000 € (alternative that we buy our own van and distribute ourselves with volunteers)
4. Budget for communications, travelling, volunteer refreshments and unforeseen – 1,200€
Total estimated campaign costs – 9,000 €
If you are of the opinion that it is important that we run this campaign then we request that you be generous and donate now. Deadline for donations is 31 of August 2017.
Should we fail to raise the necessary funds we will however apply whatever funds are raised to running a smaller campaign and in specific high impact risk areas.
The 17 councils include all 16 council regions in the Algarve as well as Odemira in Alentejo.
Let’s bring honesty back into politics!
