September 27, 2022
On July 28, 2022, the Village of Los Lunas Council “tabled indefinitely” Niagara Bottling Company’s request to increase their take of water from the Albuquerque Basin aquifer. (Niagara was requesting an increase from the 285 acre-feet/year they take now to a whopping 700 acre-feet/year – a 245% increase!)
“In the middle of the desert, in the middle of an historic drought, when our aquifer is shrinking, our water is needed for our people and farmers, not for Niagara’s profit.” – VWW
The Village Council tabled the request because they were still waiting for a report from their “water experts.” As far as we know, that water report has not been delivered. We are keeping our eyes open. This whole process has been less than transparent from the very beginning, and we are poised for the other shoe to drop, so to speak.
As soon as we know something about Niagara’s next move, we’ll let you know.
WHAT VWW IS DOING TO FIGHT OTHER THREATS TO THE AQUIFER
At the same time that Niagara was requesting to increase their take of water from the Albuquerque Basin aquifer, we at Valencia Water Watchers got involved in another serious fight to protect the aquifer – from FRACKING.
This is a long and expensive fight, we fear.
On one side you’ve got an Oil & Gas millionaire who loves to FRACK, and County Commissioners who are eager to do what he wants.
On the other side you’ve got VWW, fighting to protect the people (and the drinking water aquifer) that are at high risk of being seriously harmed by FRACKING.
If you are as passionate as we are about protecting the aquifer from the harmful effects of FRACKING, please consider donating to our fundraiser. Every dollar helps.
If you want to read more about this fight, check out our VWW UPDATES web page.
THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO
Thank you so much for your support as we continue to stand up to the NIAGARA BOTTLING corporation.
And if you also choose to support us as we stand up and push back against efforts to FRACK in the Albuquerque Basin, a thousand more Thank Yous!
