Joint statement from Mansfield, Newark & Sherwood, Gedling & Bassetlaw Leaders ⬇️
"As political leaders from across North and Central Nottinghamshire, we are united in our support for creating two brand new unitary Councils serving the whole of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.
"Under our preferred option (Option 1e), the Councils of Ashfield, Mansfield, Bassetlaw, Newark & Sherwood, and Gedling would be joined together and be responsible for all local government services in the area. A second unitary Council would serve the south of Nottinghamshire - Nottingham City, Rushcliffe and Broxtowe.
"We consider that this arrangement offers the most credible and ambitious model for local government reorganisation in our area, and makes most sense geographically, economically, and culturally. It brings together areas with long-standing ties; not only in how services are delivered, but in how our communities live, work and identify.
"This option reflects the way our communities already function and interact. It builds on existing relationships and recognises the importance of local identity, while creating a council that is has been independently assessed as being able to deliver efficiencies and meet the challenges of the future.
"The alternative, Option 1b, takes Gedling out and replaces it with Rushcliffe. We feel that this doesn’t make sensible geographies, as there is no cultural or historical connection with Rushcliffe, in the south of Nottinghamshire, and the distances and connectivity to deliver joint services aren't practicable.
"We are confident that Option 1e will enable better-connected services, closer collaboration between partners, and improved value for public money. It gives us the chance to reduce duplication, streamline systems, and deliver more joined-up services that truly work for local people.
"We encourage all residents and stakeholders to get involved in the engagement process and help shape a new council that reflects the needs, values and aspirations of our communities.
Together, we believe Option 1e is not only the most logical choice - it’s the right choice for our shared future."
