The new NMC guidelines mandate doctors to write only the generic name on prescription and avoid writing brand name.

There is a major lack of adequate testing of medicines in India and with the new NMC rule, the choice of doctors to write a quality brand and also of patients to purchase a trusted brand recommended by the doctor goes away.

The choice of writing a brand now lies completely with pharmacists who might dispense medicines not on basis of quality but depending on the margins & schemes. There have already been cases where pharmacists recommend a medicine from some unknown company over a reputed one just because they have a higher profit margin (Cost to patient might actually be higher than the branded counterpart)

We can expect Indian healthcare to descend into complete chaos if prescribed medicines suddenly stop showing desired effects, all the more in case of diseases where a slight difference in quality of medicine can lead to immense harm that couldnt be justfied by any money saved.
