Senator Charlie Dean recently filed SB 1464 "Public Facilities" that may be used to target transgender and gender-nonconforming people similar to the House bill this petition was made against. It is listed as a "related bill" to FL House's anti-transgender bathroom bill.
This Senate bill does not mention someone's sex or gender, but also concerns multi-person public facilities (bathroom, locker room, fitting rooms, etc.) like House bill HB 583. In this bill, prohibited conduct occurs when "A person who knowingly and willfully enters a public facility with the intent to harass or engage in harassment, lewd behavior, assault, battery, molestation, rape, or voyeurism commits a felony of the second degree."
Now you might ask, what's wrong with this? The problem is "intent." This law could still be used to say that people who look like they're in the "wrong" bathroom must be there with the intent to harass. People should be punished for harassment and other crimes in public facilities, but trying to prove intent puts the burden on transgender people, gender-nonconforming people, and any others that people feel don't belong in certain restrooms.
This bill’s timing is no coincidence, so if you're against HB 583, speak out against SB 1464 as well. Harassment is a crime, but using the restrooms is not!
