Say NO to Feagan Tract Development Plan: Preserve Our Small Community & Natural Beauty
The Issue
Petition Against The Feagan Tract Subdivision Development
We, the voters of Columbus, NC as well as members of the surrounding community, are putting forth a petition to express strong opposition to the proposed Feagan Tract Development. We believe that the proposed plan is not well suited for the area and would have a detrimental impact on the community we so cherish.
First and foremost, the proposed development is simply not aligned with the current needs, values, and identity of our community. The proposal includes 56 modular homes that will further stress our already burdened infrastructures (outdated water lines, congested main street thoroughfare, limited public service staff, a predominately volunteer fire department, and a middle and high school which serves the entire county).
This development would also create an influx of traffic at the worst intersection in town- Weaver Street and Mills Street (beside CVS and in front of Food Lion). Furthermore the plan entails an ‘emergency exit’ that will pass through the established community of Holly Hill*. An unwanted addition to a close knit subdivision with many children, walkers, and individuals who enjoy the quiet & slow traffic that brought them to the community.
Lastly, the environmental impacts to Horse Creek, the abundant wildlife, and the well established forest line will be beyond what is ecologically sound. The scale and scope of this development does not take into account the devastation to the natural beauty of this area.
It is important to note that we, the voters of Columbus, NC are not against progress and development. Progress and development that is thoroughly planned, aligns with the actual needs and character of the community, and is within the means of achievable growth are welcomed. This development is none of these things.
We urge our current leadership to take these oppositions into account while making the best decision for our community. The proposed development, at this location, is not a viable option. We must bring to their attention that this development and location are not a benefit to the community and must not be allowed without community support.
Please consider signing this petition to gather the attention of our current leadership.
*(Update 9/9/24 the developers updated the plan. The ‘emergency exit’ through Holly Hill- Philip street will have locking foldable bollards to allow emergency access when required rather than an open roadway)
