Breaking! Mauritius and Mozambique Say NO to deep-sea mining.

Coming to you LIVE from the International Seabed Authority Kingston! Mauritius and Mozambique announced their support for a precautionary pause or moratorium on deep-sea mining.

Their decisions bring the total to 45 governments calling for precaution before deep-sea mining can begin. This represents around one quarter of the world’s governments. 🌍

In its statement to the Assembly, Mozambique recognised that “the world is not ready yet for deep-sea mining,” highlighting the scientific uncertainty and the environmental, governance, and legal questions that remain unresolved.

These growing calls for precaution reflect a wider shift: governments are increasingly recognising that the deep ocean must be understood and protected before we can think about exploiting it.

The deep sea is one of Earth’s least understood ecosystems, home to unique species and vital processes that support life on our planet. We cannot afford to rush into industrialising these fragile environments before we understand what we stand to lose. 🌊
