Monaco becomes the 5th country to ratify the High Seas Treaty!
Good news for the ocean this week, as Monaco becomes the 5th country to ratify the High Seas Treaty (officially known as the UN treaty for the protection and sustainable use of biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction).
Just 5 of the 90 countries that have signed the treaty have actually ratified it. 60 countries must ratify the treaty for it to enter into force and begin the job of saving the ocean.
Keep talking about the High Seas!! They make up half the planet and belong to no single country. They therefore belong to all of us. They are home to many animals and their health is critical to our own.
The two key ingredients to save the High Seas are:
- No deep-sea mining. Deep-sea mining would open up a new gold rush on the High Seas.
- Swift ratification and entry into force of the High Seas Treaty.
