Say NO to Carneys 3.2 billion BC condo bailout!!!
The Issue
The federal and B.C. governments have committed up to $3.2 billion toward a partnership aimed at buying and converting more than 2,200 vacant Metro Vancouver condos into affordable housing. This execution is not a finalized, "done deal”. If other shovel ready projects for affordable housing have been abandoned in BC, this move can only be described as a government bailout. A move described by many experts “Private Profits - Social Losses.”
Urban planners and housing experts have pointed out several missing details - such as what the exact purchase cost per unit will be (estimated currently at over 1 million per unit), which specific buildings will be targeted, and what kind of discounts the government will negotiate from developers. Why are these details still undetermined when such a large sum of Canadian tax dollars is proposed to go towards this corporate bailout?
This proposal faces fierce opposition, yet tone deaf local politicians continue to support it, such as Premier Eby and Housing Minister Christine Boyle, who has openly claimed this “isnt a buyout” in defence of the bailout.
This petition calls on the government officials supporting this plan to stop, listen to citizens, and to keep out of the private market. Unrealistic housing prices cannot correct and housing prices remain unsustainably high if this bailout moves forward. Canadians want liveable housing for affordable prices. These small overpriced and unliveable condos won’t see for good reason, no one wants them, so why should taxpayers have to pick up the bill? This bailout will line the pockets of greedy developers at the expense of Canadian taxpayers.
Tell Mark Carney, Gregor Robertson, David Eby and Christine Boyle that this plan is a hard NO.
