PETITION UPDATE: BARUGH GREEN

A quick but important update regarding the proposed 400 home development at Barugh Green.

Barratt Homes’ consultation material states that the proposal includes 20% affordable housing. That may sound impressive at first glance, but let’s actually look at the numbers.

20% of 400 homes is just 80 homes.

That means 320 homes, 80% of the entire development, would not be affordable housing.

Please do not be misled by the way these figures are presented. “20% affordable housing” is a percentage, not a solution to the wider impact of a 400 home development on an already heavily pressured community.

I have now formally raised my concerns with Barnsley Council and Barratt Homes, including highways and congestion, school time gridlock, infrastructure capacity, the site’s former mining history, ground stability and contamination, drainage and flood risk, ecology, biodiversity, noise and air quality, amongst other matters.

The next step is to take this directly to our local MPs.

I also want to make one point absolutely clear:

A site being “safeguarded” for future development does NOT mean planning permission has been granted.

Safeguarded land remains subject to the proper planning process, assessment and determination. There is still an opportunity for legitimate objections and concerns to be considered.

That is why your voice matters.

If you have not already signed the petition, please do. If you have signed it, please keep sharing it. Every signature strengthens the evidence of community opposition.

Please also have your say directly to Barratt Homes. Their consultation is currently open. You can scan the QR code on their leaflet and submit your own response. Do not assume that signing the petition is enough. Make your objection known directly to the developer too.

PETITION:

If you have any additional information, concerns, evidence or suggestions about issues we should be raising, please share them. The more informed and comprehensive our objections are, the stronger our position becomes.

This is about more than simply whether we want houses built.

It is about whether this particular site can accommodate a development of this scale without causing unacceptable harm to the existing community, infrastructure, environment and highway network.

We need to keep the pressure on.

Keep signing. Keep sharing. Keep responding. Keep asking questions.

Let’s show Barratt Homes and Barnsley Council that this community is engaged, informed and prepared to challenge these proposals.

WE DO NOT ACCEPT THIS PROPOSAL.

We can fight this. The more signatures we have, the stronger we become. 🖤
