Petition updateSaving the Wildflowers of GainesvilleWhat Was it All For?

It's been a while since I updated, but I think about the wildflowers every day. Even, on sad days, where they have been mowed over.

In fact, the Wildflower Corridor of 441 has been mowed multiple times since the last time I posted. So has South Main Street. But still, I think about the Wildflowers as I pass by their gravesite.

What a complete waste of gas to add nothing of value. To detract value, in fact. The only explanations anyone has ever given me for mowing the wildflowers that are just growing where they ought to are explanations that don't make any sense.

This is not accidental, and the ramifications of it will not be accidental either. When the state of Florida experiences extreme weather, you can point your fingers at the politicians who aren't performing their role of serving the greater humanity by representing the needs of the smaller humanity. They are instead viewing us, the Citizens, as a mine with which to extract power and wealth.

It doesn't need to happen, this mowing of the wildflowers, but it does. Its not even intentionally cruel, it's cruel as a byproduct, which is worse.

I am but one Citizen of the United States, and soon I shall be but a former citizen of Florida and back in Georgia, but even if I leave a place I still care about it. Moreso, it feels, than the people who ought to care about it the most.

Our politicians aren't just allowing this to happen, they are asking it to.

I know it seems small, and many people tell me not to care.

But every day I turn on the news and am greeted by people who think that winning is telling me it doesnt matter, or asking me to enable my own mistreatment for them so they can feel powerful. Asking me to enable the mistreatment of others. They are building inhumane prisons in the Everglades and advertising their cruelty on the television for all to see. That's what our governor has proven time and again he stands for. To hurt other people because he derives profit from it. If it wasn't Florida, he'd do it in any other state.

The wildflowers, on the other hand, they just grow. They don't plot and plan ways to break the body, to cage the mind. They do not exploit the lives of all the other living beings. They feed the world. They exist in harmony with the world as they are.

Maybe that feels dramatic to you, but to me it makes perfect sense and I feel the need to share my perspective on what it feels like to drive on 441 and see what awful things they want to do to it, just because someone will profit. Just because they do not care.

It would take less effort and time in resources when we are supposedly in a time of financial straits, to leave the wildflowers alone.

As I close out on this, I want to leave the following reflections in your head:

Why are they doing it? Who does it benefit? And, what is the purpose of living in a world where there is so much concrete, the air itself burns you alive?
