YOU CAN HELP SAVE BETTAS FOR FREE!

Why Should I Care?

If loving fish is not enough, let's take a step back and look at the bigger picture.  Ethically, it's wrong to torture things.  It costs nothing for you to help prevent the torture of hundreds of thousands of bettas a year.  PetSmart typically gets a shipment of 40-60/month (depending on location). At least a quarter of these bettas die (often I see fish discarded by employees without being recorded, but PetSmart's profit margins have to show this loss). There are 1,665 stores in the nation.  That's an annual loss upwards of 300,000 lives and $1.5 million (if every perished betta somehow happens to be the cheapest veiltail breed PetSmart sells).

Betta fish are tropical fish requiring water in the temperature range of 76-83*F.  They also require filtration, a 5 gallon tank and regular 25% water changes.  Anything less than these conditions is setting your betta up for failure and eventual (if not immediate) demise.  Many people are unaware, as it has always been marketed as an acceptable norm to sell bettas in cups and stick them in bowls at home.  This is simply not sufficient.  Most bettas don't survive longer than a year after being taken home, when they should be able to thrive up to five! If you don't reside somewhere tropic already, the bettas in these cups at your local PetSmart feel similar to how you would if you were forced to live in a walk in fridge for possibly weeks on end! It would quickly become an unbearable (likely fatal) experience.

Public health!  There are zoonotic diseases such as fish tuberculosis and fish tank granuloma that can infect humans and other pets! If you don't care for animals, then please consider that this cause cares for you and your peer's health too.

What's At Stake?

The 300,000 betta fish that will perish as a result of us letting this be an acceptable market practice in society; upwards of a million bettas annually will suffer unnecessarily.  The health of other fish are at stake as well, putting a sick betta fish in a community tank can wipe out every fish in there!  As discussed above too, bettas can be carriers for diseases that will infect humans and other pets too!

Why Now?

Bettas are dying as we speak for no reason aside from the fact that as a society, we allow it.  Please help me change that, it takes simply your signature but your signature means the world.  It's cheaper for corporate up front to sell bettas in cups, and many can survive being in them for a very short duration. The sad reality is that more bettas are sent to PetSmarts than can be swiftly adopted out. This makes it an especially terrible idea in the long run, putting more at risk than just the betta's health too.  Bettas are most popular amongst children who often do not keep them properly, increasing the risk of transferrable zoonotic diseases.  For the safety of bettas and our community, please consider signing and sharing this petition.
