Update from the San Diego County Board of Supervisors:
Thank you for reaching out to our office and for sharing your concerns regarding the sale of the NCFPD-owned property.
Several years ago, NCFPD informed the County of their intention to sell the property and inquired whether the County had interest in purchasing it. Under State law — specifically the Surplus Land Act — NCFPD is required to first offer the property to other government agencies or affordable housing developers. The sale is essential for NCFPD to fund the construction of a much-needed new fire station.
In order to preserve local control and keep the current leases in place as long as possible, the Supervisor moved forward with the County’s purchase of the property. Importantly, the Supervisor has also directed staff to explore options for incorporating a community use on the site, such as a teen center or shared outdoor space. The County ultimately used affordable housing funds to make the purchase, as this was the only available funding source.
We want to assure you that this will be a lengthy process, and we expect the park to remain unchanged for at least the next five years.
Thank you again for your care and commitment to your community. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any additional questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Megan
