On the way to 3000 signatures ! The show of support for Woodcot is humbling. It goes to show the innate decency in people who feel the injustice behind what Age UK are doing.
The image in today’s update requires close attention - contains a salutary warning for any new owners of Woodcot.
It concerns the true story of a servant maid who worked at Woodcot. She lost her job after being accused of stealing. Days later her young body was found washed up on the shore at Hope.
Local people were disgusted that such a young girl would be driven to her death by the accusations of her powerful employers.
After this event the owners of Woodcot became very unpopular in the town and were hissed at in the street. After that they were rarely there apparently.
There are similarities with what is happening today. The victims may be older but they are just as powerless as that young girl all those years ago, against the huge machine that is Age UK steaming ahead regardless of the consequences. Not hearing or reading the room. They don’t care.
One wonders how the people of Salcombe will treat any new occupiers of Woodcot knowing that the rushes of Miss Jennings were ignore, that the house they occupy was hit by overturning a legal covenant, and taking the place of many old people who could have lived out their days in peace comfort and beauty. Will they rest easy knowing that they are only there because Age UK did the uncharitable and changed the covenant?
There might be a bit of hissing coming their way for sure.
In the meantime, keep signing and keep sharing.
Thankyou.
