Letter from Jeff Jones, Superintendent of Schools/CEO SD#8

Dear Parents and Guardians RE: Rural Education Enhancement Fund I am writing to you today because I have no doubt you are seeking information regarding the Rural Education Enhancement Fund that was announced by the Premier earlier this week. The announcement appears to be a recognition of the unique needs of small, rural areas. The press release did include some details regarding eligibility for the funds – however it did not include any details about a) how to access the funds, b) timing between application and receipt of the funds, or c) the source of the funding. So, it is with cautious optimism that we await more information. It is important that you understand neither the Trustees nor our Administration had any advance knowledge of this announcement. We have had no information further to the press release. The schools that were listed in the announcement appeared to have been used as examples of the kinds of schools that might qualify for the Fund. Clearly, it was not a complete or accurate list of all schools throughout the Province for which Boards will make application for funding. Our Board of Education will need to have time to receive more information. It is realistic to contemplate that Trustees will consider this announcement in their deliberations regarding the Facilities plan and consideration of closure of any school in the District.
