The Issue

Playing hockey has been a pivotal part of my life since I was 3 years old. Like me, countless individuals have found a second home at Wings West Ice Rink in Kalamazoo, MI. This local gem has been more than just a rink; it's been a community hub, fostering not just future hockey stars but also creating lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories.

Wings West Ice Rink is at risk of closing, and its potential loss would have a profound impact on the lives of many who depend on it for recreational needs, personal development, and community connection. Kalamazoo's youth need this venue to continue cultivating their athletic skills, learning teamwork, and building character. For adults like me, it’s a place to maintain a healthy lifestyle and play the sport we love.

In addition to serving as a critical piece of the community's fabric, Wings West supports local businesses. It attracts visitors who frequent nearby restaurants, shops, and hotels, boosting Kalamazoo's economy. Without it, these businesses might see a downturn in revenue, affecting jobs and families.

Historically, sports and recreational facilities have been proven to contribute significantly to personal well-being and community cohesion. The National Recreation and Park Association emphasizes that such facilities help neighborhoods prosper financially, socially, and environmentally. Wings West Ice Rink exemplifies these benefits and deserves to be protected.

To save Wings West, we urge local authorities and stakeholders to consider a comprehensive rescue plan that includes community funding initiatives, partnerships with local businesses, and increased public-private cooperation. This combined effort can ensure that Wings West remains a vibrant part of Kalamazoo's community fabric.

Please join me in advocating for the preservation of Wings West Ice Rink. By signing this petition, you are not just supporting a rink; you are preserving a critical component of our community, past, present, and future. Let's keep the rink open for current and future generations to enjoy. Sign the petition and make a difference today!

The City of Kalamazoo has long been a proud supporter of youth, collegiate, and professional hockey. Hockey is a way of life in Kalamazoo, and we appreciate the community’s passion for the sport in the region. It should be noted that Wings West is not owned or managed by the City of Kalamazoo.
