The Issue

Once again, big real estate developers are trying to tear down another one-of-a-kind Landmarked building. The West Park Presbyterian Church, the big red church most New Yorkers and visitors know on the corner of 86th and Amsterdam, is being targeted for demolition to build another high rise meaning more congestion, higher rents, the loss of a piece of history, and the only church of its kind left in the city.

The church is home to The Center at West Park, where Joseph Papp began his theater company and hosted over 75 artist residencies serving over 600 artists in the past six years alone. The church is the home of a thriving arts and beloved community center, which has been a hub of diverse artists and community outreach for decades. Let’s preserve the Upper West Side and the community we have built, and protect the neighborhood we love from those who seek to exploit it.
