The issue

Summary

The sudden closure of Wesley College hostels threatens the safety, wellbeing, and education of the students who call them home. These hostels are not just buildings; they are a community and a safe space for young people from diverse backgrounds, including international students, scholarship students, and those far from home.

We call for a pause to the closure, full transparency, and an independent review to ensure the best interests of students and their families are prioritized, alongside the dedicated staff who care for them.

Our Statement

For generations, Wesley College has been more than just a school. Its hostels have been a home, a place of belonging, and a lifeline for students who rely on them for safety, guidance, and stability. Many of these young people are far from their families, and the hostels have provided care, mentoring, and support that cannot be replaced.

The sudden decision to close the hostels completely will profoundly impact students’ lives. It will remove their safe space, disrupt their education, and take away the opportunities that allows them to thrive academically.

Staff have also been directly affected, but the greatest impact will be felt by the students. Hostel staff have shown unwavering dedication, often working long hours with minimal training or support, ensuring that students are safe, fed, and cared for every day.

Despite their hard work, staff have been unfairly blamed, while leadership failures have gone unaddressed. Decisions were made without consultation, communication, or transparency, leaving students, families and staff vulnerable.

This situation threatens not only the staff who support these students but, most importantly, the students themselves. We cannot allow these young people to lose the safe, nurturing environment they depend on.

We Request the Following Actions

An immediate pause on the closure of Wesley College hostels to protect students.
An independent investigation into leadership decisions and their impact on students and staff.
Public release of the most recent ERO report to ensure transparency and accountability.
A fair consultation process with students, families, staff, and alumni before any permanent decisions are made.
Recognition of the staff who have tirelessly supported students and upheld Wesley’s values.

Why This Matters

It is about the students who rely on these hostels for a nurturing educational environment that aligns with cultural values and identity and the staff who dedicate themselves to supporting them.

Closing the hostels without consultation shows that a fair and inclusive process has not been followed and voices of those impacted the most have been largely ignored. A vital support system that has existed for generations will be erased. The heart of Wesley College is its students and they deserve to be protected.

Sign this petition to stand for the students, protect their future, and support the staff who care for them.
