Dear Mitchell Shire Council,

 

We, the concerned residents of Mitchell Shire, call on the Council to maintain the current weekly general waste collection service. This essential service ensures the health, hygiene, and well-being of our community. 

 

Reducing the frequency of household rubbish collection would have serious negative impacts, including:

 

1. **Public Health Risks**: Less frequent collection could lead to an accumulation of rubbish, creating a breeding ground for pests and vermin. These pests carry diseases that pose significant health risks to residents.

 

2. **Environmental Harm**: Overflowing bins can result in littering and illegal dumping, which not only degrades the beauty of our community but also harms the environment. Litter can enter waterways, causing pollution and endangering wildlife. This is already a major problem for our local area that is not being adequately addresses

 

3. **Odor and Hygiene Problems**: Accumulated waste, especially animal droppings, dirty nappies and other personal hygiene related products, produces foul odors that affect the quality of life in our neighborhoods, particularly during warmer months when waste decomposes more quickly.

 

4. **Increased Burden on Households**: Families, especially those with young children or elderly members, generate significant waste. Reducing collection frequency places an undue burden on these households, forcing them to manage excess waste between collection days.

 

5. **Impact on Local Businesses**: Businesses in Mitchell Shire rely on regular waste collection to maintain cleanliness and hygiene standards. Infrequent collection could lead to unsanitary conditions that deter customers and harm the local economy.

 

While we understand the need for budget constraints and operational efficiencies, we believe that maintaining weekly general waste collection is a fundamental service that directly impacts the health, safety, and satisfaction of all residents. Currently The cities of Whittlesea and Hobsons Bay, which are comparable areas, use weekly garbage and fortnightly green waste and recycling to great effect

 

We urge Mitchell Shire Council to prioritise the well-being of its residents by continuing to provide weekly general waste collection.
