SAVE WEDNESDAY NIGHT DRIFTS @ SONOMA RACEWAY

The Issue

Sonoma Raceway recently announced they will be CANCELLING the Wednesday night drifts that have been held @ Sonoma Raceway for well over a decade.

The Wednesday night drifts were a fun, legal and SAFE environment for all of us to come together with our friends and family to have some mid-week fun for a reasonable price. Sonoma Raceway is by far the most local drift-friendly track to the central Bay Area, and for many, was the best/only justifiable option to push the limits of their driving without putting innocent people in danger on the streets.

Sonoma Drift stated they will still be allowing private events occasionally. While said events may be a great ADDITION to the Wednesday night drifts, they will never REPLACE them since they are generally less common, tickets cost nearly 4x as much as the Wednesday night drifts and no spectators are allowed. Spectators are part of what make Wednesday nights exciting for everyone, as well as bring in a lot of money to the sport.

Many of us have heard of the few “bad apples” that have made a few poor decisions at the the raceway in the past. It is important we ALL come together and make it known that we do NOT stand with their behavior as a community.

There HAS to be another solution; even if we have to pay a larger entrance fee for Sonoma to justify keeping it going. Other potential ideas could include “no tolerance bans” which could help combat irresponsible behavior from drivers/spectators. Some have suggested the donut pad be removed as it may be bringing in the wrong crowd; there are many ideas to consider before giving up on the 13 year tradition. It CAN be saved and profitable for the raceway.

The drift community is a beautiful place and we want to keep it around for decades/generations to come. Let’s keep drifting safe, legal, affordable and fun!
