The proposed realignment of state lines is to grant all of New York's Long Island Territory to New Jersey. This will allow Upstate New York to maintain its independent identity, free from the pervasive political and social influence of New York City. Such a move would not only safeguard our community's values but also prevent the potential spread of corruption and political ideologies that do not align with upstate New York; Especially after the November 4th , 2025 election with Zohran Mamdani, self-proclaimed democratic socialist, being elected as mayor of the city.

As a concerned citizen of upstate New York, I am compelled to raise awareness about this pressing issue that could significantly impact the future of our beloved state. Mamdani's victory has sent shockwaves through our community. His policies, which align with Marxist communism are not what our state needs. These ideologies have historically failed and, if left unchecked, could bring detrimental changes to New York as we know it.

A consequence bound to happen, and is already being projected by the Florida housing market is a massive wave of New York City dwellers escaping the city due to policy decisions, again due to Mamdani's ideas for the city. The mayor elect's plans upon "Tax the Rich", "Freeze Rent" and "Free Public Transport" while on the surface sounds promising, will only lead the city to ruin. The rich will be the first to leave the city, landlords will be waylaid in providing the upkeep of their residences and will cause not just the quality of homes to drop, but will lose business, perhaps entirely; causing more homelessness. Government run transport, government run grocery stores, all of it will need to be funded in some way, and the only way government can pay for the expenditures would be through taxes; but they can't tax the rich anymore, because they will leave; Which now leaves the poor and middle/working class to foot the bill of Mamdani's socialist ideas.

This whole concern is, should New York City reach this breaking point, the communistic funding would continue to stretch its ugly claws upon the rest of the state, allocating upstate New York finances, affecting our very way of life to bow the knee to that city. This is why we must act quickly, and the sooner the better. This petition is not without merit, as currently, the "Greater Idaho" movement is gaining traction among many of Oregon's eastern counties, to secede from the state and unionize with the state of Idaho. On the west coast, Portland, Oregon and many other democratic cities control the say on decisions that affect the state, which has led to the "Greater Idaho" movement. Likewise, New York City holds a great stranglehold of influence upon the rest of New York state.

Long Island's geographical and cultural proximity to New Jersey makes this proposal to move the state lines sensible, and it will promote a more cohesive regional identity. Furthermore, this change could lead to more efficient governance and resource allocation, tailoring policies to the specific needs of each distinct region rather than a "one-size-fits-all" approach dictated by a city that we as upstate citizens are so separated from. Allowing upstate New York to separate from Long Island would not only prevent Mamdani's policies from spreading further into our state, but it would also prevent the threat of an economic collapse due to policy-driven depopulation. This action would allow upstate New York to more accurately reflect the will of the people. Statistically, a majority of the counties across upstate New York are and have been republican; yet because of New York City, our voice, our will, is silenced. Policies that target the burrows of the city have no place affecting the rest of the state.

I urge lawmakers and fellow New Yorkers, even people from out of state who support this idea, to take this call seriously and consider the lasting implications of potential policy shifts in the wake of Mamdani's election.
