The Turnpike Basketball Club has been a longstanding pillar of the basketball community in the Fairfax/Annandale area for over 50 years, benefiting thousands of young basketball players over its history.  Unfortunately, due to a decline in participation rates and volunteering over the past several years, Turnpike recently held a vote to end operations for 2026-2027 and permanently dissolve the league.  That would leave hundreds of players in the Turnpike community without their local basketball league.  

In a time when there are fewer inexpensive ways for young players to develop their basketball skills and less access to indoor basketball courts at nearby gyms, that means the loss of the longstanding winter league, high school spring league, travel teams, basketball clinics and open gym options for these players.  While there does exist other large organizations in other farther away areas of Fairfax County, there is no league that specializes in supporting the well established basketball community of the Woodson/Frost school pyramid.  Especially for new players and those who just want to play basketball locally, this means a lot less motivation to learn the game without a league of their friends to play in.  It means many will miss out on the countless fun memories that past Turnpike players can testify to.  

This petition is to support the reinstatement of the Turnpike Basketball league, or the creation of a new organization to take its place.  It is unclear what options are still available after the recent vote, but we hope that with enough support from the community then other options might be considered.  It is our argument that, despite real challenges facing the league in the past years, the tradition of Turnpike Basketball is worth fighting for and finding every possible alternative avenue to support our league.
