Giulia, a volunteer from the non profit organization Vento di Terra, which has been involved in the building of the Tyre School, has gone to the village of Khan al-Ahmar to support the local population and to witness the situation first hand.

School lessons started more than a month ago and over 170 children like Fatima, the little girl in this picture, go to this school every day; it is the only one in the village. And even though some kids have to walk kilometres before getting to the school - passing close by military checkpoints - they are happy because they have at least their own school. These families are really struggling - they often do not have direct access to electricity and sometimes limited access to water.

Fatima is not her real name, we want to protect her identity since soldiers could return to the village at any moment. She told Giulia that at the Tyre School she likes playing and learning new things, she also added that one day she would like to become an English teacher. When Giulia asked her why it is so important to her to go to school, Fatima answered without hesitation: “to learn and also to become what we want to be in the future”.

Every night Fatima goes to bed, she falls asleep fearing that she will wake up without her school.
