Petition to Keep Vancouver Whitecaps FC Locally Owned
To the Current Owners of Vancouver Whitecaps FC – Greg Kerfoot, Steve Luczo, Jeff Mallett, and Steve Nash:
We, the undersigned, urge you to prioritize local ownership in the sale of Vancouver Whitecaps FC, ensuring the club remains deeply rooted in Vancouver’s community and culture.
The Whitecaps are more than just a soccer team; they are a critical part of Vancouver’s identity, uniting fans from all walks of life to celebrate the beautiful game. Selling the team to outside interests risks alienating the community and disconnecting the club from its local legacy.
History has shown us the impact of losing professional sports teams to outside markets. The sale and relocation of the Vancouver Grizzlies to Memphis devastated basketball fans in the city and left a void that has never been filled. Vancouver deserves to have world-class sports teams that reflect its vibrant, diverse, and passionate community.
The Whitecaps are at the heart of soccer in Vancouver and British Columbia:
• Community Impact: The team has inspired countless young players through its Academy programs and youth camps, nurturing the growth of soccer across the province.
• Fan Engagement: Whitecaps fans are among the most loyal in MLS, with growing attendance, doubling season ticket memberships, and a playoff-caliber team that energizes the city.
• Cultural Significance: As a soccer market, Vancouver has demonstrated its passion and potential, and keeping the Whitecaps locally owned will only strengthen that connection.
While we understand the desire for new investment and ambition, we believe that selling the Whitecaps to outside parties could jeopardize the club’s core mission and its bond with the local community. Vancouver’s identity is deeply tied to its sports teams, and we cannot afford to lose another piece of that legacy.
We urge you to consider the long-term implications of your decision. Local ownership ensures the Whitecaps remain a pillar of our city and a source of pride for generations to come. Vancouver has the talent, passion, and resources to support and grow its MLS team—let’s keep that potential in local hands.
Please do not repeat the mistakes of the past. Let’s keep Vancouver Whitecaps FC truly Vancouver.
Sincerely,
White caps fans
