As a deeply concerned member of Hawaii's vibrant soccer community, I am raising my voice to protect our beloved Waipio Soccer Complex. This is not about one team, one league, or one association. This is about the entire soccer community statewide. The negative impact this will have across tens of thousands of players, coaches, referees and spectators is beyond anyone's imagination.

The Waipio Soccer Complex has been the heart and soul of Hawaii soccer for the past 24 years. It has helped produce national championship teams and nurtured many professional players. Every week, thousands of children and adults use this park alongside neighbor island, mainland and international teams.

The proposal to convert this cherished complex into a landfill threatens not only our sporting heritage but also our environment. Landfills are notorious for their harmful effects on local ecosystems - they pollute air quality with methane emissions (EPA), contaminate groundwater sources (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences), and can even increase local disease rates (Harvard School of Public Health).

We cannot let this happen to our precious Waipio Soccer Complex – a place that fosters health, camaraderie, competition and dreams for so many in Hawaii.
