Save the Venice Shark Tooth Festival

The Issue

The Venice Main Street organization holds the permit for The Sharks Tooth Festival in the City of Venice. Their management of the 2023 festival and lack of understanding of the field of paleontology makes them less than ideal to organize a festival of this magnitude and importance to the community. They also lack the connection to a charity other than themselves as previous festivals have done, such as the Sarasota Special Olympics. They have downsized the festival in order to make it fit within Centennial Park, instead of the Airport Festival Grounds in years prior. They have neglected various requests and grievances of vendors participating in the festival.

The Venice Florida Shark Tooth Hunting Fans INC. is a 501(c)3 and (VFSTHF) has over 70,000 members and has the means to put on the festival in its original glory. With the pledge of support from the group, we could have the festival at the Venice Airport Fairgrounds as it has always been. We would listen carefully to vendor requests as well as increase security. Many people voiced that the festival was too crowded and that the tents were too small to help the vendors. This could be accommodated with a larger or multiple fossil tents at the festival grounds. There was also rampant theft experience at the festival due to overcrowding in small spaces. This could be corrected by having more security and more open spaces around tables/booths. Most of all, majority of proceeds would be donated to a shark related charity such as Mote Marine Laboratory, Saving the Blue, or Fins Attached to help sea life.
