Save the Historic Trees on Wooster Street in New Haven!
I am deeply concerned about the City of New Haven's plans to remove the trees along Wooster Street. While the City claims that all of these trees are damaged or unsafe, I find it hard to believe that so many of the trees need to be cut down. The city has flagged nearly 50% of all the trees on the street for removal in early NOVEMBER!
Wooster Street is one of New Haven's most special neighborhoods, known for its history, charm, and cultural significance. The mature trees that line the street have been part of that character for decades. They provide shade, improve air quality, and add to the beauty of the neighborhood. Losing them would permanently change the look and feel of this historic street.
I understand that public safety is important, and I'm not suggesting that trees posing a genuine danger should remain standing. But before these trees are removed, I believe the City owes residents a clear explanation and evidence showing why each tree needs to come down.
I'm asking the City of New Haven to:
- Review the condition of each tree and the specific reasons removal is necessary, versus treat or repair the trees.
- Allow an independent evaluation by a certified arborist to determine which trees, if any, truly need to be removed.
- Explore alternatives, including treating, pruning, maintenance, or other measures that could preserve trees without compromising public safety. Bug infestations, mold, and root rot are often easily treatable conditions.
- Give residents an opportunity to be heard before making decisions that cannot be reversed.
These trees have been growing for generations. Once they're gone, nothing can bring back the shade, beauty, and character that took decades to develop.
I believe we owe it to our neighborhood and future generations to make every reasonable effort to save as many of these trees as possible.
