The Issue

Five 120-year-old healthy trees are set for the axe in the Gordon Primary School on Earlshall Road, Eltham, SE9.

The trees, two London Planes and three Limes, were planted when the school was built in 1904 and form an iconic view in the road.

The school says that bird poo in causing health problems for children and staff in the nursery play area which the trees over-hang.

The trees are subject to Tree Protection Orders which requires permission to be gained before any works can take place.

The proposals have appeared on the RBG planning pages but there are no signs outside the school, local residents have had no alerts and there are no mentions in recent school letters to parents.

The school doesn't say in the application whether it has tried using a leaf blower or high pressure jet washer to cleanse the area.

Comments can be made before 4 July on the link below.

As a resident and local childminder i use the school and enjoy the view the trees give to road in which i live. The trees are in the Reception playground not the Nursery Playground. Reception children catch every bug going when they start school. They are not made more ill by bird poo. In 24yrs i have never been poo’d on! The school insists on making parents and carers queue up outside the school under the trees rather than open the gates and allow people to wait inside the school so avoiding standing under the trees or in bird poo on the pavement outside. Changing this alone would make walking bird poo into the grounds less likely. There used to be a hut in the playground under the trees which was taken down by the school. Surely there cannot be any good reason to remove mature trees that are vital for our environment and our children.
