The man who died had a mental illness and probably didn't intend any harm.  He may have been acting out of confusion.

‼️ FAMILY OF 23-YEAR-OLD MAN MAULED TO DEATH BY TIGER BREAKS SILENCE, REVEALS HE STRUGGLED WITH MENTAL ILLNESS

The family of a 23-year-old man who was mauled to death by a Siberian tiger after entering its enclosure at a wildlife park in England has broken its silence, revealing that he had struggled with significant mental illness for years.

William Chapman, 23, died Saturday, October 10, after climbing into a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster, England.

The horrifying incident unfolded shortly after 1:30 p.m., prompting an emergency response and the evacuation of the wildlife park.

Witnesses reported seeing Chapman behaving unusually before the attack. One eyewitness described him wearing headphones and pacing near the enclosure before entering the restricted area.

Other accounts described Chapman dancing along a walkway above the enclosure while listening to music.

Chapman’s devastated family is now speaking publicly about the young man they loved and the mental health struggles he experienced before his death.

In a statement released Tuesday evening to BBC, the family described William as a loving young man whose life was about much more than the circumstances surrounding his death.

“William was a bright, warm and engaging young man whom his family dearly loved - and William loved them back.”

His relatives revealed that Chapman had experienced “significant mental illness” for several years and had been prescribed “strong medication.”

However, the family emphasized that it remains unclear whether his mental illness contributed to his decision to enter the tiger enclosure.

They said that determination should be left to the coroner and asked the public to respect the ongoing investigation rather than speculate about his intentions.

“The family are utterly devastated by their loss and are struggling to come to terms with what has happened,” the statement continued.

They also expressed hope that investigators would determine what led William to enter the enclosure.

“The family are hopeful that the relevant authorities will do their upmost to get to the bottom of why our amazing son did what he did.”

Chapman was also remembered by the Jackie Palmer Stage School in High Wycombe, where he had previously been a student.

“We loved watching William grow, both as a person and as a performer, during his time with us,” the school wrote in a tribute Tuesday.

“It was a privilege to be part of his journey, and he will be remembered with great fondness by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.”

Meanwhile, City of Doncaster Council has launched a health and safety investigation into the fatal incident, including the circumstances that allowed Chapman to gain access to the dangerous animal’s enclosure.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park remains closed as the investigation continues.

Park officials have also confirmed that Altai, the tiger involved in the attack, will not be euthanized.

The animal remained inside its enclosure following the incident, and park staff expressed their heartfelt condolences to Chapman’s loved ones.

Although the circumstances surrounding Chapman’s actions remain under investigation, his family hopes the public will remember him for the person he was rather than the disturbing circumstances of his death.
