Save the Tennis Courts at Stern Grove

Save the Tennis Courts at Stern Grove
The Issue
San Francisco Recreation and Parks hosted a community meeting on November 3rd to discuss the future of the two tennis courts at Stern Grove. The courts, which were dual lined for tennis and pickleball play, were destroyed during a water main break last year. Since then, pickleball players have been pushing Rec and Parks to rebuild the site for pickelball only, with eight permanent, dedicated pickleball courts. Rec and Parks’ proposals for the site can be found here.
The Tennis Coalition of San Francisco:
- opposes the conversion of public tennis courts to pickleball
- opposes ad hoc, one-off decision making
- believes outdoor racquet sports can and should work together for the common good
- seeks a moratorium until a full, long-term plan for public outdoor racquet sports has been developed in collaboration with Rec and Parks and the pickleball community
San Franciscans for Sports and Recreation shares our position that Stern Grove be restored as dual lined courts. The nonprofit advocacy group donated $108,000 to have the tennis courts at the site resurfaced prior to the flood.
The Rec and Park Commission’s Operations Committee is expected to discuss the issue in January, followed by a decision by the full Rec and Park Commission at a later date.
We urge everyone who opposes the elimination of tennis courts at Stern Grove to SIGN THIS PETITION, attend the commission meetings (dates TBA), and email the people at Rec and Parks.
