The Issue

I love Formula 1. Over the years, I’ve passionately followed each season, enchanted by the rich tapestry of strategy, skill, and tradition that defines the Grand Prix. Recently, Formula 1 has witnessed unprecedented growth, capturing the hearts of millions worldwide. Yet, this very success has brought about a proposal that threatens the core essence of the sport – the expansion of the F1 Sprint race format.

Currently, Stefano Domenicali has proposed to increase the number of Sprint races to potentially 12 by 2027. While these races provide quick excitement, they risk undermining the integrity and tradition of the Grand Prix weekend. The heart and soul of Formula 1 lie in the tension and anticipation culminating in Sunday's race. By diluting the importance of the main event, the F1 Commission risks alienating longtime fans who cherish the traditions and the spirit of the sport. A Grand Prix is not just a race; it’s a storied event that should reflect the pinnacle of racing excellence and competition.

Moreover, introducing more Sprint races could, in the long run, jeopardize the sport's long-term integrity. Such expansion prioritizes short-term spectacle over the strategic depth and richness that have defined F1 for decades. It is essential to nurture the sport’s legacy while embracing innovation prudently. Behind the glamour, thousands of mechanics, engineers, staff, and drivers are at a breaking point. A 24-race calendar is grueling; doubling the Sprints creates a "perpetual peak" that risks the health and safety of the paddock’s backbone with burnout.

To preserve the spirit of the Grand Prix, it's crucial to engage in a dialogue that respects the voices of the fans. A balanced approach is needed, one that combines innovation with tradition and driver welfare. Considering alternatives, such as limiting the number of Sprint races, could be a step in the right direction.

By signing this petition, you join a community of F1 enthusiasts who believe in safeguarding the essence of the Grand Prix. Together, we can urge the F1 Commission and Stefano Domenicali to reconsider the sprint expansion plans and preserve the integrity and original allure that made F1 a unique sport. Sign now to protect the spirit of the Grand Prix for future generations!
