Happy Earth Day Everyone!
We want to take this opportunity to celebrate a victory for a very precious river, the Snow River and the entire Kenai River watershed!
Chugach Electric decided to stop their Snow River Dam Project citing public outcry and opposition by their membership. Another huge reason this was stopped is that the Snow River is protected under a Backcountry Prescription and is managed under protections as a recommended Wild and Scenic River, the absolute highest level of protection a river in the US receives.
Though, we are enjoying this victory, the proposal brought to light many issues within the Railbelt Utilities and the inefficiencies of the transmission system, not to mention the fact that Chugach Electric also generates nearly 222% of the electricity needed at the height of peak demand. It also highlights the disturbing fashion which this project was rolled out and presented to the public, given the overwhelming information that has been available since the 1960's of why a dam on the Snow River would not be feasible. There is also overwhelming historical data from the already 84,000 dams blocking nearly 600,000 river miles that proves the devastating effects to upstream and downstream riverine environments.
With that being said, the work of Peninsula Rivers Conservancy has just begun! We are looking at learning more about the Eklutna River (which has not seen the 5 species of wild salmon spawn there in almost 100 years) and Cooper Lake, which has not seen robust, traditional spawning of King Salmon since the late 1950s.
Stay tuned as we continue to work on offering solutions to energy demands as well as the demands of Alaskans for the return of wild salmon!
Thank you so much for all of your support and hard work! We look forward to continuing to work hard for places that have no voice!
