Stop Chugach Electric From building 3 massive dams!!**Chugach Electric VP Sends letter to National Forest to strip Wild and Scenic Recommendation**

Peninsula Rivers Conservancy
Apr 18, 2017
Despite the comment period ending for the public and stakeholders in the Chugach National Forest Service's revised Land Management Plan, Chugach Electric's VP Paul Risse sent a 5 page letter to the Forest Supervisor on Friday, April 14th, in a blatant attempt to strip the Snow River of it's prestigious Wild and Scenic recommendation - the strongest protection rivers receive in the United States. This congressional protection ensures that the rare, less than 1/4 of 1% of US rivers is protected from development.
The comment period for the revision of the Chugach National Forest plan was initiated in 2012 with 10 meetings. Again in 2013, 18 meetings were held. 9 open houses were held in 2015 after the Wild and Scenic and Recreational Rivers Evaluation Report was published. The public and stakeholder comment period for revisions ended on February 19, 2016. Chugach Electric had more than their fair share of opportunities to submit recommendations during this wide comment period.
This smug attempt to call into question the Forest Service's methodology and make revisions after 4 years of opportunities to comment and suggest revisions, means that Chugach Electric will stop at nothing to eliminate "show-stopping" hurdles from getting in their way of building 3 dams on the Snow River.
Acknowledging that they are aware the river is recommended for Wild and Scenic designation, a Congressionally-awarded designation to "protect rivers holding significant value to our Nation", and then attempting to discourage the U.S. Forest Service from continuing this recommendation in their revised plan (when every publicly available document and draft of the plan thus far states that the Snow River will maintain its Wild and Scenic recommendation), calls into question the ethics of Chugach Electric's upper management team, particularly Mr. Risse.
Please join us tonight in Moose Pass as we confront this monstrosity in our back yard!!
