***Snow River Dam Update!***

Peninsula Rivers Conservancy

Peninsula Rivers Conservancy was invited to present our concerns about the large-scale hydroelectric project Chugach Electric is planning to the Kenai River Special Management Area (KRSMA) Habitat Committee yesterday afternoon. We also sat in on Chugach Electric's presentation to the KRSMA board members last evening. Some very critical questions need to be asked of Chugach Electric!
Chugach revealed some interesting things:
-Chugach Electric has the capacity to produce 500 megawatts of power, yet the absolute peak demand is a mere 225 megawatts. Chugach produces nearly 222% of the demand of their customers. That's just one of the 6 railbelt utilities...
-Chugach Electric only wants to invest in "proven technologies." Large-Scale Hydro has "proven" to decimate fish populations, choke off rivers and decimate fish populations above and below dam sites
-There are numerous and detailed studies that have been done over the past 70 years involving the Snow River Hydro project, yet Chugach Electric claims that they were just "looked at, not studied." These historical records are hundreds of pages long and make pretty convincing statements about the lack of feasibility and gross environmental impact large-scale hydro would do to the Snow River Corridor.
-Mike Brodie from Chugach Electric, when asked about if a need for this project has been identified said "I don't have an answer." The real need is to address the inefficiencies within the Railbelt which currently result in a 20% waste of energy consumed in Alaska that's $1 billion dollars of energy wasted!
Please join us as we point out these absurdities and ask Chugach Electric these tough questions at their public information sessions!
