Postpone rezoning of the Mountain Shadow Pub property (rez. ref. no. 13-33) until issues surrounding preservation of the building are addressed. 4 alternate options which allow this have been laid out here.
The Issue
The Mountain Shadow Pub, which has been sold to a developer, is slated to be demolished in order to build a town house complex. The Mountain Shadow Pub has been a fixture of North Burnaby and the SFU area since it was established in 1980, and it's unique architecture has made it a landmark in Burnaby. Although it was built a relatively short time ago, making it a non-heritage building, it has become a Burnaby icon, and has a rich history over the last 35 years of operation.
Although there have been some concerns by local residents about noise from the pub, I believe other options must be looked at instead of bulldozing this great building, and none of these options have yet been evaluated.
These options include:
1. Continued use as a pub under new management (a modernized tap house, like other recent successful area pubs.)
2. Turned into a more upscale restaurant with less focus on liquor sales (such as the Hart House Restaurant at Deer Lake.)
3. Purchased by the city and leased out to operators of the above two options, or turned into a museum or other city run public space.
4. Or simply moved off site to be preserved at a facility such as Burnaby Village Museum.
If you are in support of preserving the Mountain Shadow Pub as a part of Burnaby's history in any of these ways, or have your own ideas, support this movement to get the city to postpone rezoning until re-examining these options. The Zoning change has not yet fully been approved, but it is quite far along and there is little time!
