Our children's education and love for reading are at stake. As a parent and resident of Berwick, PA, I am deeply concerned about the potential loss of our school book fair - an event that has been integral to our community and our children's educational journey.

The school book fair is not just an event; it is a tradition that fosters a love for reading among our kids. It provides them with access to a wide range of books, encouraging their curiosity and promoting literacy. According to the National Education Association, students who read more at home are better readers and have higher math scores (NEA 2019).

Our school district, however, has made the decision to end in-school book fairs after several parents reportedly complained about the content of some of the books that were offered. By canceling the entire in-school book fair it indicates that this small group of parents can dictate not only what their child reads but rather what ALL children can read.  The clear solution could have been for these parents to rightfully restrict their children from purchasing books instead of taking away this important tradition from all of our students. 

We must act now to ensure that future generations in Berwick can continue enjoying this enriching tradition.  Let us stand together as a community committed to fostering education.
