Council to vote on demolishing Prince of Wales Theatre building.
On Thursday 4th December- Cabinet will meet to vote on the Prince of Wales Theatre to be demolished, "subject to planning consent."
After eleven months of community campaigning, over £34,000 raised, over 21,000 petition signatures, 35+ dedicated volunteers, and a comprehensive Community Asset Transfer bid by Cannock Chase Theatre Trust, that an independent consultant scored at 79% - the Council's response is to flatten the building.
In 2023, Cannock was promised a £20 million regeneration project, including refurbishing the Prince of Wales Theatre into a cultural hub. However, of that £20 million, £18 million was allocated to town regeneration, while the remaining £2 million remains 'unused'. Cabinet also recently announced £2+ million loan for leisure centre improvements- a decision notably absent from their press releases. The planned Theatre refurbishment is now scrapped, leaving only a cleared site and plans to demolish the Theatre. This marks the loss of one of the town’s few cultural venues, which once attracted 70,000 visitors annually.
Join us on Thursday, 4th December at 5:00pm outside the Council Offices, Beecroft Road, Cannock.
Bring your passion, bring your placards, but above all - bring peace.
Let our voices be strong, our message be clear, and our conduct be an example of unity and respect. This may be our last chance to stand together, to be heard, and to show what principled, peaceful support truly looks like.
The Prince of Wales Theatre is more than just bricks and mortar; it’s a vital part of our town’s identity, holding generations of memories—laughter, creativity, and community. The council’s decision isn’t just about a building; it’s a choice about whether our cultural heritage is expendable and whether spaces that define who we are can simply be erased. The outpouring of emotion around this decision shows how deeply people care—because this Theatre has always mattered, and its value remains irreplaceable, a symbol of the heart and soul of our community.
See you there - in solidarity, in spirit, and in steadfast calm.
