We have not received any response to our Open Letter to the Liberal party’s Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Minister Catherine McKenna. However, we have received a letter of support from the Member of Parliament Rachel Blaney who is with the New Democrats opposition party. Here is part of her response: I agree with you. With only 76 remaining members, Southern Resident killer whales are in an extremely vulnerable state and unless the government intervenes to address shipping traffic, ongoing contamination and the drop in Chinook salmon numbers, the Southern Resident population will continue to decline. Ministers have the power to recommend an emergency order if they are of the opinion that a species is facing imminent threats to its survival or recovery. Then it’s up to Cabinet to decide whether to issue the order. New Democrats believe that the Liberal’s should do so immediately, deal with these threats and ensure the Southern Resident killer whales can continue to survive for generations to come.
