Save the Only Free Health Clinic for Thousands of South Texans

The Issue

For 25 years, Operation Border Health has shown what’s possible when South Texans come together. Every summer, thousands of people — many without insurance — get free checkups, dental care, glasses, and more, thanks to this massive volunteer-run clinic.

This year, for the first time ever, it’s been canceled.

Federal cuts left our local public health departments understaffed and under-resourced. Cameron and Hidalgo counties lost critical funding, making it impossible to run the event safely. But the need hasn’t gone away — and neither has our determination.

We know what this region is capable of. Doctors, students, and volunteers have shown up year after year to serve their neighbors. Families have waited since dawn to get help. This isn’t just about health care — it’s about dignity, equity, and showing that the Rio Grande Valley takes care of its own.

If enough of us speak up, we can bring this back. Our local leaders are already looking for new ways to keep it going — with support from schools, universities, and the community. What they need now is proof that people care.

Add your name to show that South Texans won’t let Operation Border Health disappear quietly. Let’s fight for its return — and for the thousands who depend on it.
