Call to Action to Save The Nullarbor!

The Western Green Energy Hub (WGEH) would transform the Nullarbor Plain into an industrial landscape. And a recent decision by the Australian Minister for the Environment, Tanya Plibersek, has almost ensured that it will go ahead without appropriate scrutiny.

The project proposal submitted by WGEH on 23rd January was woefully inadequate in its documentation of environmental values and significant impacts. And so was the Minister’s decision, which was released on 7 March. Despite the recognition of the Nullarbor’s National Heritage and World Heritage Values – in a report commissioned by the Commonwealth Government in 1992 – neither the proponent nor the Government consider heritage values worthy of further consideration. The Minister for the Environment is therefore abrogating her responsibility for protecting the Nullarbor’s heritage values.

The Labor Government’s dereliction of environmental values and due process opens the door for the developer to press ahead with impunity. It is therefore imperative that the developers of the WGEH and their corporate backers be put on notice that they do not have social license to industrialise the Nullarbor Plain.

With a national election looming, now more than ever it is crucial that people step up and loudly voice their opposition to this environmentally destructive proposal for the Nullarbor. Read our latest media release in response to the Environment Minister’s decision.

Our petition to Save The Nullarbor was tabled in the Australian Parliament by Greens Senator Nick McKim on 5th February, at which time it had 17,000 signatures. Senator McKim stated:

“This stunning region, worthy of World Heritage, should be protected, not smashed for corporate profit.”

While presentation of the petition is a major milestone to be celebrated it is but another step on the way to protecting the Nullarbor.  Because it is a non-conforming petition it remains open and currently has more than  22,500 signatures!
