Save the North Fork Kern River: Demand Sustainable Minimum Flows for Our Future
The Issue
The majestic North Fork Kern, a cherished Wild & Scenic River, is in peril. The lifeblood of our community, the home to diverse wildlife, and a recreational haven, faces an existential threat due to unsustainable water diversion practices. Southern California Edison's (SCE) current licensing allows the Kern River No. 3 Hydroproject (KR3) to divert crucial flows out of the river at Fairview Dam, leaving 16 miles below — a vital ecological corridor — drastically dewatered and its ecosystems at the brink.
The KR3 diversion disrupts the natural rhythms of the river. It compromises not just the river's aesthetics and recreational value, but also the survival of the species that rely on it. This is our call to action.
We, Kern River Boaters, alongside with the Kern River Fly Fishers’ Council, are championing a proposal to revitalize the North Fork Kern by advocating for a minimum instream flow regime grounded in contemporary environmental science. Our proposal is backed by the rigorous California Environmental Flows Framework (CEFF) and supported by river management practices across the globe.
We have witnessed firsthand the detrimental effects of current water management: increased water temperatures, heightened concentrations of bacteria, fish habitat destruction, and an overall decline in river health. But there's hope. By realigning KR3’s minimum flow requirements with CEFF's scientifically recommended levels, we can reverse that damage and protect the river for generations to come.
Your voice is powerful. By signing this petition, you are standing for a future where the North Fork Kern River thrives. You are standing with the local community, the wildlife, and the countless visitors who find solace and joy in the river's flow. Demand that the managing agencies, including FERC, USFS, CDFW, USFWS, and CSWRCB, implement our science-based instream flow proposal.
Support our river. Support our future. Sign the petition, share the petition, and let's ensure that the North Fork Kern River's beauty, vitality, and ecological integrity are preserved for the next 40 years and beyond.
