Save the North Carolina Zoo Aviary!

Save the North Carolina Zoo Aviary!
The Issue
On Thursday April 22, 2022, the NC Zoo issued a press release announcing the permanent closure of the Aviary.
The North Carolina Zoo is the largest natural habitat zoo in the world, attracting around 860,000 annual visitors. The Aviary was built in 1980, and houses over 93 birds of 33 species, as well as 2000 plants of 450 species, in a unique domed structure filled with tropical plants and winding walkways. It is one of, if not the most beloved attraction for most visitors to the zoo, providing an up close and personal experience with the many exotic birds and plants, as well as a calm and beautiful respite on hot summer zoo exploration days. Comments gathered on reports of the closure show almost universal disappointment and dismay from many North Carolina residents.
The NC Zoo is also one of only two state-sponsored zoos, and this factored into the decision taken by zoo officials in concert with the NC State Department of Natural Resources. The officials stated that the structure is badly in need of expensive repairs, and apparently money for this is not available.
This petition is to gather support to show the NC Legislature that the citizens would like to explore the options of rebuilding the Aviary through bonds, existing revenue, or failing that, a fundraising effort.
Please share this widely. The more signatures we can show elected officials, the better and quicker movement we are likely to get. The zoo is already in the process of relocating the birds; time is of the essence. Thank you!
