Earlier this year, the beloved New Picture House (NPH) was at risk of being completely transformed into a luxury sports bar, erasing its rich legacy as St Andrews’ cherished cinema. Thanks to the collective efforts of the St Andrews Film Festival Charity, Fife Council, and YOUR incredible support—signing petitions, gathering over 12,000 votes, and showing up 600 strong at a peaceful protest on February 4th—the story didn’t end there. Together, we inspired a revised plan from the developers.

The NPH will now retain its iconic name and primary auditorium as a dedicated cinema, alongside multifunctional spaces for digital games and food. This victory preserves a cornerstone of our town’s cultural heritage, ensuring NPH continues to serve as a beacon for film lovers. Once reopened, the NPH will proudly become the longstanding venue for the St Andrews Film Festival.

Until then, we invite you to join us for this year’s 6th Annual St Andrews Film Festival, running from 25th to 30th November 2024. Experience the magic of cinema at our screenings in The Buchanan Theatre and St Andrews Town Hall, with insightful filmmaker Q&As and hands-on masterclasses hosted at St Andrews Union and Town Hall.
