Save the Nature Based Program from being slowly dismantled

The Issue

As a passionate advocate for Nature-Based Learning, I witness firsthand the positive impact this innovative education method has on our students. The administration in our district is switching the program for students enrolled in the Nature-Based program to be forced to split their time between traditional mainstream schooling and the comprehensive Nature-Based education they initially signed up for. This evolving structure will force our children to undergo multiple transitions throughout the day, creates opportunities for lost tools and garments, and reduces their allocated time with specialist teachers.

Nature-Based learning is about enmeshing the children with the natural environment while teaching the standard curriculum, thus cultivating respect for the environment and promoting active learning. The success of our program can be seen by the fact that we attract students from neighboring districts. Unfortunately, the newfound structure threatens the uniqueness of our program as parents may hesitate to have their children in two different school systems.

We fear this splitting of curriculum might not only compromise the educational value but also the emotional and psychological wellbeing of our children who are made to adapt to divergent environments in a single day. Studies (such as the one published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2020) have correlated nature-based learning with academic success, personal development, and satisfaction.

In order for us to optimize these benefits, we plead that the school board reevaluates their current stance and helps us maintain the integrity of our Nature-Based program. We urge you to stand with us in ensuring our children receive the full immersive experience they deserve, without the stress of transitioning settings. Help us maintain the comprehensive, enriching nature-based education that our students love. Please sign this petition and stand up for our children's right to robust, holistic education.
