Petition updateSave the Mighty Sequoia Tree at Centennial Square, Victoria BC, from Wrongful DemolitionCity backing down (temporarily?) on the Sequoia, Protest over the Square Redev tomorrow July 10 2025

Note: Apologies, the correct date for the protest is Thursday July 10, 2025 9:45 AM at the Centennial Fountain.

Yesterday's Times Colonist had the following article: Sequoia supporters relieved it will stay — for now - Victoria Times Colonist

Although the public have been breathing vast sighs of relief at its reprieve, the question remains, are the majority of Councillors, just holding off until after the election to still remove it?

Why have they left the proverbial Sword of Damocles hanging over the sequoia.  Is the only reason they aren't taking it down, because the city literally can't afford to take it down anymore?

And what about the rest of the square?

I have been informed that "The Friends of Centennial Square are organizing a 'Citizen’s March’ for Thursday morning, [July 10, 2025] gathering at the Centennial Fountain at 9:45am. This is to show support for the Hammond-Gardiner proposal which will be brought to Council that morning."

As the Times Colonist article on the Sequoia mentioned: "A motion proposed for Thursday’s [City of Victoria] council meeting by councillors Marg Gardiner and Stephen Hammond asks council to “postpone further redesign of Centennial Square until the City doesn’t go into debt over this project.”"

Also, there is a new petition to save a giant perfectly healthy maple tree in Cordova Bay that is under imminent threat of removal by the District of Saanich.
