Save the Markham Home in Portland's Historic Laurelhurst Neighborhood

Save the Markham Home in Portland's Historic Laurelhurst Neighborhood
The Issue
On May 27, 2014, you applied for a permit to demolish the Markham Home at 3206 Northeast Glisan Street, Portland, Oregon 97232. Your company intends to replace this historic property with two newly constructed houses, which we feel will significantly change the character of the neighborhood.
Our group is called Stop Demolishing Historic and Vintage Portland Homes, and we are working with the owners of surrounding homes and Portland's Laurelhurst neighborhood as well. We are interested in finding a private buyer who will preserve the home's historic and architectural integrity.
The house you are proposing to demolish is currently on the historic resource inventory list and is a well-known landmark that literally stands at one of the the gates to one of Portland's most beautiful neighborhoods, Laurelhurst. Further, it was one of the earliest homes built in the area.
We are also concerned about the environmental impact of a demolition. We are aware of current construction laws and will proactively collect lead dust samples over time, meticulously documenting every move your contractors make. We have many families with small children and we are all concerned that lead dust will be distributed throughout the neighborhood during demolition.
