Save the Lagoona in Dahab

Save the Lagoona in Dahab
The Issue
I've lived in Dahab for 30 years, and the Lagoona is a place that's incredibly close to my heart. It stands as the last bastion of natural beauty in what is otherwise steadily being engulfed by development. The Lagoona has always served as the lungs of Dahab — a serene and enlightening space where one could walk, cycle, or ride under the stars without the intrusion of artificial light.
It is also a very important area for kite surfing and water sports for which Dahab is famous.
The Lagoona is important to everyone living in Dahab but is also a sanctuary for an array of wildlife. It is home to ground-nesting birds, falcons, herons, owls, and Ibises, providing a crucial habitat and stopover point for migrating species, including flamingos. These creatures rely on the Lagoona's unique ecosystem to thrive, and any disruption would have catastrophic consequences.
Now, this fragile ecosystem is under a severe threat. There are plans underway from the Egyptian government to transform this cherished natural sanctuary into a tourist spot laden with cement and flooded with artificial lights.
Such plans will decimate the natural beauty of the Lagoona, erase its ecological value, and obliterate the natural sanctuary that it provides for both wildlife and the residents of Dahab.
Preserving the Lagoona is essential, not just for the protection of its unique flora and fauna but also for safeguarding Dahab's natural heritage for future generations to appreciate. Developing this area would not only be an environmental tragedy but a cultural loss for all.
I urge everyone who cherishes nature and wishes to preserve our world's extraordinary places to add your voice to this pressing matter. Together, we can compel decision-makers to rethink these detrimental plans and help save the Lagoona for nature, for future generations, and to uphold Dahab’s unique natural heritage. Sign this petition and let’s make a difference.
