Thank you, every single one of you, for trying to help us help ourselves.
Unfortunately planning permission was granted to demolish Kettering's only cinema. Greed wins.
I was denied the right to speak at the planning committee meeting.
There was absolutely no community consultation.
An article about the planning decision in our local newspaper: https://www.northantstelegraph.co.uk/news /politics/council/kettering-odeon-demolition-plans-approved-4903080
Kettering Odeon Manager's Statement: "I would like to raise an objection to this application based on the fact that the details in the covering statement are not truthful. I am the Manger of the business currently occupying the building, and I would like to make it clear that the landlords have served us our notice, therefore we have no choice but to vacate the premises in February 2025. Odeon had no
intention of ceasing trading at this site, and in fact on many occasions attempted to negotiate with the landlord about 1. Renewing our lease agreement and 2. Renovation of the building. I feel it is the interest of the community for the council to be aware that the details set out in this application are not accurate, and without the landlord’s serving notice, the business would have still continued in this location. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Kind regards "
The 8 screen cinema complex in Kettering is:
- Kettering's ONLY cinema
- Northamptonshire ONLY Odeon cinema
- Being FORCED to close in February 2025
I am led to believe that the new owner of Kettering Leisure Park (KLP), the Augur Group Limited, want to demolish all structures on KLP, seak a change of use for the land, and then build a housing estate before then selling it all on again, for vast profits; they wouldn't renew the Odeon's lease at a reasonable price.
It seems to me to be counterintuitive to tear down the town's existing leisure facilities, just so you can build more housing and then fill that housing with Kettering residents who will then require leisure facilities...
