Save the Japanese Language Program @ Syosset High School
Please help us save our Japanese language program and keep our beloved Japanese instructor teaching Japanese at our high school.
- Our problem:
Syosset High School decided to cut its Japanese language program for the next year onward. This decision comes without a previous notice, consultation, or meeting with the Japanese teacher, the students, or the parents. Incoming 9th graders who signed up for a Japanese class will have to give up their choice, even though the Japanese instructor will be there and continue teaching for upperclassmen. There has not been a formal public announcement.
- Why this is a problem:
Japanese language program represents a choice for a student. A choice to try a new language in high school. A choice to take an elective language. A choice to fulfill your graduate requirement while you develop an appreciation for your favorite culture. We want to ensure that our future students have this choice.
Our beloved Japanese teacher has 24 years of experience teaching Japanese language. She is a dedicated teacher who is committed to making her class fun and energetic every day. She takes the students on field trips locally and internationally. She hosts a Japanese club after school that provides additional fun environment for students to appreciate Japanese culture.
If they terminate the Japanese program, our future students will NOT have this choice to take this elective language in high school. Our experienced teacher will move on to a different teaching assignment and it will be nearly impossible to recreate a Japanese language program in the future again at our school.
- How you can help:
Students, Parents, Teachers, Alumni, Neighbors:
If you feel that it is important for Syosset High School to continue teaching Japanese Language, you love Japanese culture and support it, if you like keeping Syosset High School unique, or if it makes you feel proud to support diversity, please sign this petition.
If you would like to show your support even more, there will be an opportunity for community residents to speak at the board meeting at 8pm on Monday May 13 at South Woods Middle School, 99 Pell Lane, Syosset, New York.
Come and have your voice heard!
