Save the historic tamarind tree in South Kolkata's Vidyasagar colony

The Issue

This majestic tamarind tree (located in Vidyasagar Colony, South Kolkata) was planted over 70 years ago by freedom fighter Parul Mukherjee, a respected revolutionary and member of the Anushilan Samiti, who contributed to India’s struggle for independence and later devoted herself to the welfare of refugees and education in this community.

Over the decades, the tree has grown into a living landmark, providing shade, beauty, and ecological benefits to the neighbourhood. It has become a vital habitat for numerous birds and urban fauna and serves as an important urban green space in one of the city’s densely populated localities.

This tree stands on public road, but the area adjoining is being redeveloped , placing it at risk of being felled. Keeping in mind the immense contribution of revolutionary Parul Mukherjee to the independence of India, and to this colony, and the protect and preserve the biodiversity, we are writing this petition to the MMIC, Parks & Gardens, Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

We, the undersigned residents, citizens, conservationists, and well-wishers of the cultural and environmental heritage of Kolkata, bring to your attention this matter of significant cultural, historical, environmental, and community importance — the urgent need to protect and preserve the historic tamarind tree.

We therefore urge the Kolkata Municipal Corporation to take the following actions:

a) Issue a protective order to ensure that the tamarind tree is not removed, damaged, or cut down under any redevelopment plan.
b) Create a monument to Parul Mukherjee near the tree
c) Install informational signage at the site detailing the historical significance of Parul Mukherjee and the tree’s contribution to local biodiversity and community identity.

This tree is not merely a botanical specimen — it is a symbol of resilience, shared history, and ecological harmony. Its preservation would reflect Kolkata’s commitment to honouring its past while fostering sustainable urban living.

We trust that the Kolkata Municipal Corporation will recognise the urgency and significance of this appeal, and we earnestly request your kind and prompt action to safeguard this beautiful symbol of our city for current and future generations.
